Flood Crisis in Assam

Guwahati, August 1 - The districts of Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Charaideo in Assam are currently grappling with severe flooding, impacting approximately 192,000 individuals across the state. Tragically, the death toll has risen to 82 following the recent loss of two more lives due to the floods, as reported by officials on Saturday.

As of Thursday, over 200,000 residents in eight districts were affected by the flooding. While conditions have slightly improved, the Dikhow River in Sivasagar and the Dhansiri River in Numaligarh, Golaghat, remain in critical flood situations. Authorities are urging residents to steer clear of these areas.

Around 13,000 individuals have been relocated to 54 relief camps, with 26 distribution centers operational, providing assistance to 5,384 people. Various agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations.

This year, the floods have claimed one life each in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, bringing the total fatalities to 82. The number of affected individuals stands at 192,799, with Charaideo being the hardest-hit district, where 77,456 people are currently impacted.

Following Charaideo, Sivasagar has 63,492 affected individuals, and Jorhat has 34,067. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state cabinet decided to hold a meeting with government and private insurance companies on August 5 to expedite claims related to damaged vehicles, livestock, and other properties. Additionally, a meeting with Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) will also take place on the same day to request a grace period for loan repayments for borrowers in the four affected districts (Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat).

This announcement follows a special meeting of the State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) chaired by the Chief Minister, where it was decided to grant a six-month grace period for loan repayments to all residents in the flood-affected districts. Sarma expressed on social media, "Our government stands firmly with every family affected by the floods in these four districts of Assam."

In addition to relief efforts, a state subsidy of ₹41.67 crore has been approved under the PM Suryagram scheme for 9,289 beneficiaries in the affected areas.
