Bengaluru Faces Heavy Rain and Flooding

Bengaluru: In recent days, Bengaluru has been hit by heavy rainfall, leading to significant weather disruptions. A particularly intense downpour on Sunday night resulted in severe flooding across various parts of the city, with Horamavu being the hardest hit. The flooding was so extensive that rescue teams had to utilize boats to reach residents stranded in inundated streets on Monday morning. This incident highlights the dire state of the city's basic civic infrastructure.

Areas such as Vidyaranyapura Sai Layout in Horamavu faced extreme flooding, which severely impacted daily life. Footage from the region depicted water levels rising above knee height in front of numerous homes. Authorities had to deploy boats to evaluate the damage and provide assistance. Despite ongoing requests from residents and protests advocating for improved drainage systems, the area remains highly susceptible to flooding after each rainfall.

A local resident expressed, “Everyone in this vicinity is struggling. It’s only within this 200-300 meter radius. There is no adequate sewage system here. Schools, colleges, and workplaces are all affected because of this.”

Similar flooding incidents were reported in Panathur RUB and other low-lying regions. Additionally, areas like New BEL Road, Nagawara, and Silk Board, Hoodi circle faced severe traffic congestion due to waterlogging.

Even the renowned Manyata Tech Park was not spared, resembling a shallow lake with over two feet of standing water at several entry points. Civic authorities were actively engaged in pumping out the accumulated water.

Public Outrage on Social Media

The flooding of major thoroughfares ignited anger among residents, prompting many to voice their frustrations on social media. One user remarked, “Nagawara main road was never flooded; the recent drainage works have ruined it; rainwater is blocked all over the road and is causing flooding.”

Another user added, “Please visit Thygarajanagar and see how the roads are being damaged and how work is proceeding at a snail's pace. Bengaluru roads are a nightmare due to potholes. Infrastructure has taken a severe beating.”

“The main issue around Manyata Tech Park is the disposal of garbage into stormwater drains, which leads to flooding by causing blockages,” commented another user.
