Severe Flooding and Landslides Devastate Arunachal Pradesh
Impact of Recent Floods and Landslides
Arunachal Pradesh has faced significant destruction due to recent floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall across several districts. This natural disaster has damaged roads, bridges, schools, and other public infrastructure, isolating numerous areas. According to an official statement from the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC), sudden flooding occurred in Kurung Kumey district, while landslides affected Pakke Kessang, West Kameng, and Papum Pare districts. The death toll remains at seven, with over 97,000 individuals impacted across all 26 districts of the state. Kurung Kumey district has been hit the hardest, where intense rainfall in the upper regions of the Kume River led to sudden flooding in the Parasi-Parlo Circle and Damin sub-division on Monday morning. The floodwaters swept away the bridge connecting Huri and Damin, severing road access to the sub-division.
Damage to Infrastructure and Educational Institutions
In the Parasi-Parlo Circle, floodwaters infiltrated the inspection bungalow, partially damaging two residential homes and a church, while the bridge connecting to Pagam village was also washed away. The flooding severely impacted one of the region's key educational institutions, St. Thomas School, which was completely submerged. This resulted in damage to classrooms, school buildings, teaching materials, furniture, equipment, and teachers' quarters. Consequently, all educational activities at the school have been suspended until further notice.
Initiation of Relief Efforts
Officials reported that the sudden flooding has caused extensive damage to transportation, public infrastructure, and homes in Kurung Kumey. The district administration has commenced relief operations in collaboration with paramilitary forces, police, and other agencies to assess the damage. A comprehensive survey is being conducted to ascertain the full extent of the damage and identify immediate repair needs.
Deteriorating Flood Conditions in Arunachal
Meanwhile, a significant landslide near Pakado village in Pakke Kessang district has blocked National Highway-13, halting traffic. Officials indicated that road repairs may take two to three days, advising travelers to avoid the Itanagar-Seppa road until further notice. In West Kameng district, heavy rainfall has caused a section of the road leading to the Sela Tunnel to wash away. Travelers are recommended to use the old Sela road as an alternative route. Additionally, in Papum Pare district, the Potin-Kimin road has been closed since Sunday evening due to a landslide near a Shiva temple.
