Critical Flood Situation in Golaghat

Golaghat, July 25: The flood crisis in Golaghat district has escalated, impacting over 31,000 individuals as river levels remain dangerously high in multiple areas.

Concerns have intensified due to the release of water from the Doyang Hydroelectric Project located in Nagaland, prompting local authorities to monitor at-risk zones closely.

Recent flood reports indicate that 125 villages across five revenue circles have been affected, with a total of 31,399 people impacted.

Floodwaters have inundated approximately 3,074.97 hectares of farmland, leading to significant crop damage and threatening livelihoods.

In response to the situation, Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Phukan, along with district officials, visited the Padumpathar area in Merapani on Friday to evaluate the conditions and oversee relief efforts.

The district administration has set up 11 relief camps, currently housing 1,216 displaced individuals. Additionally, relief distribution centers are assisting thousands of residents affected by the floods.

Several rivers in Golaghat are still flowing above the danger threshold. The Dhansiri River at Numaligarh has reached 78.85 meters, surpassing the danger level of 78.42 meters.

Similarly, the Gelabil River at Badulipara is at 77.97 meters, exceeding its danger mark of 76.10 meters, while the Kakdonga River at Dufalating is flowing at 88.08 meters against a danger level of 87.50 meters.

The flood report also highlights the Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh as one of the rivers exceeding safe levels in the state.

Compounding the situation, all four spillway gates of the Doyang Hydroelectric Project remain open, discharging approximately 157 cubic meters of water.

Residents are concerned that this additional release could elevate the Doyang River's water level, increasing flood risks in downstream areas such as Merapani and Sarupathar.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has confirmed that Golaghat is one of 12 districts currently facing flood challenges in the state. The deluge has affected five revenue circles, including Golaghat, Khumtai, Bokakhat, Morongi, and Dergaon.

Authorities are advising residents in low-lying and riverbank regions to stay vigilant as water levels continue to fluctuate, with potential rainfall in upstream areas likely to worsen the flood situation in the coming days.
