Flash Floods Impact Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong

DIPHU, Aug 10: The districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong are currently facing significant challenges due to severe flash floods, a result of continuous monsoon rains affecting the area.

Rising river levels and swift runoff have submerged vast low-lying regions, leading to substantial disruptions in daily activities, rural trade, and transportation networks.

One of the most affected areas is the Dalmara Sunday market, where floodwaters inundated commercial stalls, damaging merchandise and forcing vendors to evacuate.

Critical public infrastructure in Bokoliaghat and various villages within the Dongkamukam revenue circle has been severely impacted, displacing many families as water levels surged into residential areas.

In light of the worsening conditions, the Karbi Anglong District Disaster Management Authority, in collaboration with local administrations, has activated emergency relief measures. Relief camps and temporary distribution centers have been set up in elevated, safe areas to provide clean drinking water, food supplies, and medical assistance to those affected.

As a precautionary step, the chairperson of the DDMA and district commissioner, Aranyak Saikia, has ordered the closure of all popular picnic spots near waterfalls and riverbanks to avert potential fatalities due to sudden water rises.

Units from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local emergency teams are on standby with motorboats and safety equipment to assist in evacuating households from severely flooded areas.

Field officials are currently assessing damage to crops, livestock, and homes to facilitate timely financial support. Local authorities are also monitoring river discharge levels and advising residents in low-lying areas to stay alert and adhere to emergency relocation protocols until the weather improves.
