Ranchi, Oct 28: The weather in Jharkhand has shifted dramatically due to the severe cyclonic storm 'Arnab', which formed in the Bay of Bengal.
Since Wednesday morning, various regions, including the capital city of Ranchi, have experienced rainfall, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a warning for heavy rain across nine districts.
Areas such as Ranchi, Khunti, Simdega, Gumla, Lohardaga, Bokaro, Seraikela-Kharsawan, and East and West Singhbhum are expected to face significant rainfall. The cyclone's influence is also anticipated to lower temperatures in Jharkhand by approximately three to four degrees Celsius.
In light of the adverse weather and potential worsening conditions, authorities have decided to suspend classes from kindergarten to Class 12 in Ranchi and Lohardaga districts on October 28 and 29 as a precaution.
Intermittent showers have persisted in Ranchi since Wednesday morning, with overcast skies. The combination of rain and strong winds has noticeably altered the weather, resulting in cooler temperatures throughout the city.
Similar weather patterns have been observed in other regions of Jharkhand, including Hazaribagh, Koderma, Chaibasa, Deoghar, Giridih, and Bokaro, where cloudy skies and rainfall have disrupted normal weather conditions.
Meteorological Department scientist Abhishek Anand noted that the geographical positioning of Jharkhand suggests that the Singhbhum area is likely to feel the cyclone's effects first.
Subsequently, rainfall and strong winds may extend to other regions of the state, contingent on the cyclone's trajectory and strength.
The Meteorological Department has advised residents to stay alert, especially in areas forecasted for heavy rainfall.
Cyclone 'Arnab' made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast early Wednesday morning.
The department's forecast indicated that the cyclone would cross the coast south of Yanam, between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, with sustained wind speeds expected to reach 125–135 km/h and gusts potentially hitting 150 km/h during landfall.
In response to the changing weather, Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri held a meeting with relevant officials to ensure readiness and a swift response to any weather-related incidents.
As part of the precautionary measures, the electricity department's control room and the Ranchi Municipal Corporation's rapid response team have been put on high alert.
These teams are prepared to address issues such as power outages and waterlogging resulting from heavy rain or strong winds.
The Railways have also implemented precautionary steps in anticipation of the cyclone's effects.
Reports indicate that operations for at least six trains either departing from Jharkhand or passing through the state have been cancelled due to the current conditions.
The administration has urged residents to take necessary precautions during thunderstorms and strong winds.
Commuters are advised to be cautious while traveling on roads affected by waterlogging and to remain vigilant regarding changing weather conditions.
The public is encouraged to heed weather warnings from the Meteorological Department and follow local administration instructions to reduce the risk of accidents and emergencies.
Farmers have been advised to relocate harvested crops and other agricultural products to safe areas to shield them from rain and strong winds.
