Seven Suspected ULFA-I Associates Arrested in Joint Police Operation

In a significant operation, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested seven individuals suspected of links to the banned ULFA-I group. The arrests, made along the inter-state border in Tinsukia district, follow a week-long intelligence-led operation. Authorities believe some detainees may have facilitated a recent grenade attack on an Assam Police camp. The investigation is ongoing, with police examining potential connections to extortion and other underground activities. The involvement of educated youth in such networks raises further concerns about insurgency recruitment in the region.

Margherita, April 12: A collaborative effort between the Assam Police and Arunachal Pradesh Police has resulted in the capture of seven individuals believed to be associated with the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) near the inter-state border in Tinsukia district.

The arrests occurred in the Lekhapani Police Station area following a week-long operation that commenced on April 7, based on specific intelligence reports, as stated by officials on Sunday.

This coordinated initiative aimed at individuals suspected of serving as intermediaries for the banned group across the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Berlin Neog from Bordumsa, Mithu Gohain and Lilambar Moran from Pengeri, Bikash Deka from Kakopathar, Shiva Dey and Paritosh Deb from Miao in Arunachal Pradesh, and Manab Deb from Makum.

According to police sources, some of those detained are believed to have been involved in facilitating a recent grenade attack on an Assam Police battalion camp in Jagun, Tinsukia, which resulted in injuries to four commandos.

Investigators suspect that the detainees may have provided crucial information to ULFA-I members prior to the attack. However, no official comments have been made by security agencies regarding the arrests at the time of this report.

All seven individuals are currently undergoing interrogation at the Lekhapani Police Station as part of the ongoing investigation.

Initial findings indicate that the suspects had maintained ongoing communication with the insurgent group and were involved in facilitating its operations.

Authorities are also looking into whether these individuals were connected to extortion or other illicit activities in the area.

Officials have noted that some of the detainees possess educational qualifications, raising alarms about the recruitment of educated youth into insurgent networks.

This crackdown has intensified security measures in the region, with agencies increasing surveillance along the sensitive Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border due to concerns over militant activities.
