Seven Arrested in Ganeshguri Clash: Police Custody Granted
Violent Incident in Ganeshguri Leads to Arrests
Guwahati, Feb 28: A Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court has ordered a three-day police custody for seven individuals accused of involvement in a violent altercation that caused alarm in the Ganeshguri area on February 26.
The suspects, identified as Wadik Modi, Diganta Haloi, Wasim Akhtar, Amit Bhowmik, Jitu Barman, Tanish Sharma, and Jyotishman Bora, were apprehended by Dispur Police on Friday for allegedly instigating fear and chaos following a late-night brawl under the Ganeshguri flyover.
Reports indicate that tensions flared in the bustling neighborhood after a dispute between two groups escalated into a physical fight around midnight.
A young man, known as D.K. Basumatary, had come to Ganeshguri with a friend for dinner. At the same restaurant, a trio consisting of Amit Bhowmik, Jitu Barman, and Tanish Sharma was also dining.
The three reportedly engaged in a disagreement with the restaurant owner.
After their meal, they allegedly pushed Basumatary’s friend, which ignited a confrontation between the two groups.
Sources suggest that the trio called for reinforcements, and soon, several young men arrived in vehicles, launching a violent attack on Basumatary and his companion.
Serious accusations have emerged, including claims that one of the suspects brandished a firearm during the incident.
It has been reported that one of the victims sustained a head injury after being struck with the weapon.
This case has garnered considerable public interest, particularly because one of the accused, Wadik Modi, is said to be the son of former Deputy Commissioner Bibhash Modi.
He is alleged to have participated in the assault alongside the others.
An FIR was filed at Dispur Police Station on the night of the incident.
In response to the complaint, police acted promptly and arrested the seven individuals. Dispur Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, and further legal measures will be taken based on the findings.
