Setback for RLD as UP Unit President Resigns Ahead of Elections
RLD Faces Leadership Challenge
The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), led by Jayant Chaudhary, has encountered a significant setback. Ramashish Rai, the president of the party's Uttar Pradesh unit, announced his resignation from both his position and the party on Friday. This development comes just seven months before the state assembly elections.
Rai cited the divisive politics of the ruling BJP-led NDA as the reason for his departure. The RLD is a key ally of the NDA at both the state and central levels.
Concerns Over Democracy and Social Justice
In a letter addressed to the Minister of Skill Development and Education, Rai expressed his concerns about the increasing dominance of economically powerful groups over Indian democracy. He highlighted the growing trend of dividing society along caste and religious lines. Rai pointed out that issues related to education, employment, and social justice are causing distress among the general populace.
The RLD is a significant component of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), partnering with the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Uttar Pradesh government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Rai's Tenure and Resignation Statement
Rai was appointed as the president of the RLD's Uttar Pradesh unit on May 27, 2022. In his resignation letter, he stated that the ongoing attacks on the Constitution, democracy, and constitutional institutions pose a threat to democracy itself. He emphasized that the party should not be greater than the individual, nor should the nation be subordinate to the party, which led him to resign from his roles.
He also reflected on his contributions to the organization, mentioning the challenges faced by youth, students, and farmers. Rai warned that Indian democracy appears to be increasingly under the control of money and influential classes, with a rising tendency to divide society based on caste, sub-caste, and community.
