Selva Prabhu's Remarkable Achievement

Indian triple jumper Selva Prabhu Thirumaran, who secured a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow, Scotland, disclosed that he was battling food poisoning during the competition.

India concluded the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with an impressive tally of 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze, placing fourth overall. Thirumaran achieved his first CWG medal with a jump of 16.52 meters, finishing behind compatriot Praveen Chithravel, who earned silver with a jump of 16.58 meters, and Jamaica's Jordan Scott, who claimed gold with a leap of 16.72 meters.

Unbeknownst to many, Thirumaran competed while experiencing significant physical discomfort due to food poisoning, which affected his performance.

Reflections on the Competition

Upon returning to New Delhi from Glasgow on August 3, Thirumaran expressed his disappointment over not clinching the gold medal, attributing his weakened state to the illness he faced just before the final event.

"I wish I could have won the gold. I was really aiming for it, but illness struck just as the competition began," he shared with the media.

"I believe there is always a personal cost in such situations. I am mentally resilient, so I pushed through despite the challenges," he added.

Aiming for Future Success

In the qualifying round, Thirumaran finished third with a jump of 16.26 meters. Although he improved his performance in the final, the lingering effects of his illness prevented him from achieving the top podium position.

This bronze medal marks a significant milestone in Thirumaran's athletic career, being his first appearance at the Commonwealth Games.

Looking ahead, Thirumaran emphasized the importance of maintaining his health, expressing his determination to refine his technique for future competitions, particularly the Asian Games.

"Staying healthy is my priority moving forward. I am confident in my consistency and want to enhance my approach technique to secure gold in upcoming events," he stated.

"I take each day as it comes, knowing that every performance counts. My immediate goal is to qualify for the Asian Games and build from there," he concluded.

In addition to his bronze at the CWG 2026, Thirumaran also earned a silver medal at the 2022 U20 World Athletics Championships.
