Security Measures Intensified as Delhi Metro Stations Close Amid Protests

Metro Station Closures in Central Delhi

New Delhi, July 22: On Wednesday, security was heightened in central Delhi, leading to the closure of sixteen Metro stations, including key locations such as Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, and Central Secretariat, in response to protests at Jantar Mantar.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed that interchange services at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, and Central Secretariat would remain functional, allowing passengers to transfer despite the station closures.

The affected stations include Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhambha Road, Supreme Court, Seva Teerth, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh, and Shivaji Stadium.

This decision follows violent protests that erupted on Monday, where thousands of supporters from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and students marched from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan due to ongoing examination irregularities, including leaks of the NEET-UG paper.

The protests, which originated at Jantar Mantar, attracted students, opposition leaders, and activists who called for accountability within the education system. The Delhi Police have committed to a comprehensive investigation into the incidents of violence.

In light of these events, security measures have been significantly increased in the vicinity to ensure public safety.

On Tuesday night, Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh visited innovator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, shortly after his transfer from Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment.

Wangchuk was discharged from Safdarjung Hospital earlier that evening and transported to Medanta under strict security, following a directive from the Delhi High Court. He was admitted to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the care of Dr. Sushila Kataria, a specialist in internal medicine, as confirmed by hospital officials.

The meeting between the two Union Ministers and Wangchuk took place as the activist continued his indefinite hunger strike, which has now reached its 25th day.
