Guwahati, Oct 22: The Northeast region of India is bordered by five countries, encompassing approximately 5,484 km of international boundaries with China, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. The terrain is characterized by rugged hills, dense forests, and river valleys, making these borders particularly porous. This region is home to over 200 ethnic groups, many of whom maintain strong cultural and familial connections that transcend national lines.

Security Threats in the Region

The area faces a variety of security challenges, including insurgency, narco-terrorism, illegal immigration, refugee movements, arms trafficking, human trafficking, radicalization, and geopolitical tensions.

While the level of insurgency has significantly decreased in recent years, threats to the international borders remain a concern, according to official sources.

Challenges at the India-Bangladesh Border

One of the critical areas of concern is the India-Bangladesh border, which spans 4,096 km. As of early 2026, approximately 3,240 km of this border has been fenced, leaving around 857 km unfenced due to challenging riverine terrain, marshy areas, and pending land acquisition processes. Efforts are ongoing to enhance surveillance and complete fencing in these vulnerable sections.

Issues of Illegal Immigration and Trafficking

This border is particularly affected by illegal immigration, trafficking, smuggling, and increasing radicalization. Long-standing undocumented migration has raised alarms regarding cultural shifts and resource allocation, particularly in Assam, leading to political unrest driven by demographic changes and land encroachment.

From 2024 to 2026, attempts at infiltration have persisted despite extensive border fencing in many areas. Authorities in Assam reported the return of 1,422 illegal immigrants between February 2025 and January 2026, alongside regular small-scale push-back operations.

Human Trafficking and Smuggling Networks

Additional challenges along the India-Bangladesh border include human trafficking and smuggling operations. Infiltration attempts continue, often linked to cattle smuggling and human trafficking activities. Networks are known to traffic women and children from Bangladesh into India for purposes such as sexual exploitation, forced labor, or domestic servitude, frequently employing document forgery to access public services. These activities not only strain local resources but also exacerbate community tensions.
