Historic Achievement at Rotterdam Marathon

Indian long-distance runner Sawan Barwal made headlines last month by breaking a national marathon record that had stood for 48 years during the Rotterdam Marathon in the Netherlands. On his debut in this long-distance event, Barwal finished with a remarkable time of 2:11:58, surpassing the previous record of 2 hours and 12 minutes set by Shivnath Singh at the National Inter-State Championship in Jalandhar back in 1978.

Focus on Time Rather Than Record

In an interview, Barwal shared that his main goal for the race was to achieve a specific time rather than to break the record. "This was my first marathon. I aimed for a target time of around 2:08 or 2:10 hours. I prepared with that goal in mind, and while I was aware of the national record, my focus was on finishing strong," he explained.

Reflections on the Race

Barwal reflected on the challenges he faced during the race, particularly in the final kilometers. "The last 2 kilometers were tough, with many ups and downs. When I crossed the finish line, I noticed the clock indicating a national record, but I wasn't entirely sure until the organizers confirmed it," he recounted.

Emotional Response to the Achievement

The 28-year-old athlete expressed mixed feelings about his achievement, stating, "I felt joy for breaking the record but disappointment for not hitting my target time. However, as I processed the moment, I began to appreciate breaking a record that many of my training partners had tried to surpass for years."

Path to Marathon Success

Barwal shared insights into his journey in athletics, which began in school without a clear focus on running. His progression from school competitions to becoming a leading long-distance runner in India highlights his dedication. "I started athletics in school, and as I began winning medals, my passion for the sport grew. Achieving national medals motivated me to aim higher," he noted.

Future Goals and Aspirations

Looking ahead, Barwal is determined to improve his marathon time significantly. He aims to lower the national record to around 2:06 or 2:05 hours in the coming years. "This was just my first marathon, and I plan to push my limits further in future races," he stated, emphasizing his focus on upcoming international competitions, particularly the Asian Games.

Support System in Athletics

Barwal highlighted the importance of a strong support system in an athlete's journey. "Long-distance running requires years of disciplined training and mental resilience. The support from my coaches, family, and partners like ASICS has been crucial in my pursuit of excellence," he said, acknowledging the role of ASICS in providing the necessary resources for his training.
