Sarfaraz Khan Opens Up About Mental Struggles Amid National Selection Snubs
Sarfaraz Khan's Journey in Domestic Cricket
Indian cricketer Sarfaraz Khan, who has faced multiple exclusions from the national team, has shared insights into his mental struggles following these setbacks. Currently, he is representing Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, where he continues to accumulate runs.
Struggles After a Promising Start
Since his debut Test series against England, where he scored 200 runs with three fifties at an average of 50.00, Sarfaraz has found it challenging to secure a consistent place in the national squad. Despite a remarkable 150-run performance against New Zealand in Bengaluru last year, he remains sidelined from the Indian team.
Brief Recall to the National Team
Sarfaraz was called back to the Indian team as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan during the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, but he did not play in any of the matches. Following this, he was also omitted from the India A squad for an unofficial Test tour in New Zealand.
Maintaining Motivation Amid Challenges
After Day 1 of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy match against Railways at Brabourne Stadium, Sarfaraz discussed his motivation despite being overlooked for national selection. He revealed that his father Naushad's unwavering support inspires him to keep striving for excellence.
Sarfaraz stated, "Every morning, I question why I should work harder. I've played for India, so I could easily rest on my laurels. But seeing my father’s dedication pushes me to perform for him and keep playing cricket."
Performance in the Ranji Trophy
In Mumbai's first innings, Sarfaraz scored 55 runs off 100 balls, contributing to a 98-run partnership with skipper Siddhesh Lad, who scored 47 runs. This effort helped Mumbai reach a total of 247/6 at the end of Day 1.
Relentless Work Ethic
Sarfaraz emphasized that his routine remains unchanged despite his past successes. He stated, "It's tough to score runs, and my practice continues year-round. I don't know how many runs I will make, but my effort remains consistent."
Reflections on Support
Expressing his feelings about the lack of support throughout his career, Sarfaraz noted that he has primarily relied on his father's encouragement. He remarked, "I have fulfilled my father's dream of playing for India, and my journey has been marked by hard work and perseverance."
Current Season Performance
In the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, Sarfaraz has scored a total of 250 runs, including one century and one fifty, maintaining an impressive average of 62.50 across four innings.
