Saptak Talwar Eyes Major Breakthrough at DP World India Championship
A Transformative Moment for Talwar
Saptak Talwar, currently ranked as India's top player on the PGTI Tour, is on the brink of a potentially life-altering few weeks. As stated in a recent press release, the upcoming tournament features an impressive prize pool of $4 million, marking the highest amount in India for the second consecutive year. This event could also determine the leader of the DP World PGTI Order of Merit, now referred to as the 'Race to DP World India Championship.'
An Unprecedented Opportunity
Thanks to a significant partnership between the DP World PGTI and the DP World Tour, the winner of the Indian Order of Merit will gain full status on the main Tour. This collaboration highlights DP World's commitment to investing in Indian golf, which is part of a broader initiative that also supports cricket and encourages youth participation in sports.
Exciting Competition Ahead
The tournament promises to be thrilling for fans and golfers alike. Spectators can look forward to watching renowned players such as two-time Masters champion Rory McIlroy, defending champion Tommy Fleetwood, and former FedEx Cup winner Viktor Hovland, along with other Major champions. For Indian golfers, the DP World India Championship represents a pivotal opportunity.
Understanding the Race to DP World India Championship
The newly established 'Race to DP World India Championship' aims to identify the DP World PGTI Order of Merit Champion for 2026, as well as qualifiers for the DP World India Championship 2026. This inaugural year will feature continuous golfing action leading up to the championship, with the top 24 players securing their spots for the event. Additionally, the top 60 players on the Order of Merit will retain their playing rights for the 2027 season.
Talwar's Journey to Success
The second half of the season includes nine events, culminating in the inaugural Kapil Dev Invitational Tour Championship in early October, which will finalize the 24 spots for the DPWIC. Currently, Talwar leads by over Rs. 20 lakhs against second-placed Jhared Hack from the US, who is unlikely to participate in upcoming events. Talwar is also ahead by more than Rs. 30 lakhs compared to the next best Indian player, Honey Baisoya. Despite his lead, Talwar remains cautious, stating, 'The DP World PGTI Order of Merit is not a done deal.'
A Game-Changing Event for Indian Golf
Talwar expressed his excitement about the DP World India Championship, emphasizing its significance for Indian golf. He noted, 'This event could be a catalyst for Indian golf. In ten years, we will look back at this as the moment that transformed the landscape of the sport in India.'
DP World's Commitment to the Sport
Hemant Kumar Ruia, Country Manager for DP World in the India Subcontinent, stated, 'Our commitment to India goes beyond business; supporting sports growth is crucial. The DP World India Championship can create life-changing opportunities for players like Saptak.' This year has been pivotal for Talwar, who won his first professional title in 2025 and has since been a strong contender for the DP World PGTI Order of Merit.
