A New Approach to Durga Puja

Silchar, Sept 24: In an era where Durga Puja is often celebrated with grand pandals and extravagant themes, Sanskriti Chetana Nyas in Silchar is striving to redirect attention towards the deeper social significance of the festival.

This year marks the inaugural community Durga Puja organized by Sanskriti Chetana Nyas, which emphasizes the importance of women's dignity, family values, and cultural consciousness. A unique aspect of this celebration will be the 'Xata Kumari Puja', where 100 young girls will be worshipped.

The organizers intend to honor these girls as embodiments of divine femininity, while also recognizing their parents. They believe that the true essence of worshipping the Goddess is realized when society respects women beyond the confines of the puja pandal.

Additionally, the event will include a symbolic program featuring newly married couples, promoting themes of mutual respect, responsibility, and family harmony. This initiative aims to bridge religious practices with modern social issues.

The pandal at Town Club field will serve as a cultural hub, utilizing bamboo and stone instead of relying solely on decorative elements to showcase India's rich artistic and architectural heritage. Local artists, craftsmen, and performers will collaborate to create an environment where visitors can experience art, history, music, and spirituality in unison.

“Our goal is to present Durga Puja in its ideal form by adhering to spiritual traditions and Sattik practices. The celebration will also convey messages about civic duty, cultural values, and environmental stewardship,” stated Prof. Niranjan Roy, president of Sanskriti Chetana Nyas.

The festivities will commence on Mahalaya with a ceremonial torch-lighting event.

This initiative began on July 14, leading to the establishment of a 75-member committee, with a 30-member executive team currently overseeing the preparations.
