'Challenging Mental Battles'

Ashwin emphasized that after Samson's outstanding performances in the World Cup and a successful stint in Ireland, he was unexpectedly dropped following a single poor performance in England. Ashwin believes such experiences could leave Samson questioning the trust and understanding of his position within the team. With Samson's international career beginning in 2014, Ashwin pointed out the mental challenges he may have encountered throughout his journey. "If you were in Samson's shoes, wouldn't you feel frustrated after excelling in the World Cup and Ireland, only to be dropped after one failure in England? He must be grappling with significant mental challenges and wondering why his contributions aren't recognized. His path has been far from easy since 2014," Ashwin remarked.

Inconsistent Opportunities and Ongoing Scrutiny

Following three consecutive underwhelming performances in T20Is, Samson was replaced by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the second T20I against England in July. Although he returned for the final match of the series, he was later omitted from the squad for the T20I series in Zimbabwe. Samson made a comeback in the opening T20I against Afghanistan but managed only 10 runs off eight balls.

Ashwin noted that Samson is subjected to relentless scrutiny, with his performances often evaluated inconsistently. He pointed out that when Samson succeeds, supporters claim they have always believed in him, but when he falters, he is quickly labeled as inconsistent, adding to the pressure he faces. Ashwin suggested that comparisons with Sooryavanshi may complicate Samson's situation further, intensifying the mental strain he endures. "When he performs well, people act as if they always supported him. Conversely, when he struggles, they label him inconsistent, which increases the pressure. It's uncertain whether the criticism stems from Samson's performance or from Sooryavanshi being sidelined due to his play. One can only imagine the pressure on Sanju Samson," Ashwin concluded.
