This performance marks the highest individual score recorded in a T20 World Cup final.

Samson's exceptional form continues as he surpassed the legendary Virat Kohli, becoming the player with the most runs in a single T20 World Cup. He also joined Kohli and Shahid Afridi in an exclusive group of players who have scored fifties in both T20 World Cup semifinals and finals.

His innings of 89 runs came off just 46 balls, featuring five fours and eight sixes, achieving a strike rate of 193.48. This score eclipsed the previous record held by West Indies' Marlon Samuels, who scored 85* against England in the 2016 final, and New Zealand's Kane Williamson, who made 85 against Australia in the 2021 final.

Tournament Statistics

Throughout the tournament, Samson has accumulated 321 runs in five innings, boasting an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37, including 27 fours and 24 sixes. As of now, he stands as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, surpassing Kohli's 321 runs from the 2014 T20 World Cup, making him the Indian player with the most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition. However, Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan has set a new record with 383 runs at an average of 76.60 and a strike rate of 160.25, including two centuries and two fifties.

Kohli had previously scored fifties in the 2014 T20 World Cup semifinals, with scores of 72* against South Africa and 77* against Sri Lanka in the final. Afridi also contributed with scores of 51 against South Africa and 54* against Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's.

Notably, this final also marked the first time that the top three batsmen in the lineup all scored half-centuries.

Match Overview: India vs New Zealand

In the match itself, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. However, a resurgent performance from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 52 runs off 21 balls with six fours and three sixes, alongside a 98-run partnership with Samson, made New Zealand regret their decision.

Following a brief period of slower scoring, Shivam Dube added valuable runs, finishing with 26* off eight balls, helping India reach a total of 255/5, the highest score in T20 World Cup history.
