Sanju Samson Shines with 89 Runs in T20 World Cup Semifinal Against England
Samson's Remarkable Performance
The cricket community celebrated Sanju Samson's outstanding innings of 89 runs during the ICC T20 World Cup semifinal held at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
After a stellar performance of 97* off 50 balls against the West Indies in the virtual quarterfinal, Samson continued his impressive form, dominating the English bowling attack with a blistering 42-ball 89, which included eight fours and seven sixes, achieving a strike rate exceeding 211.
Praise from Cricket Legends
Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs took to X to commend both Sanju and Finn Allen, who recently set a record for the fastest T20 World Cup century against South Africa. Gibbs noted that both players focus on 'clean hitting' rather than 'funky shots', calling their batting style a valuable lesson for many openers.
"Fin Allen and Sanju Sampson seldom look to score behind the wicket and no need for funky shots just good clean hitting. Simple and very effective. Lesson for a lot of openers. #T20WorldCup2026 #INDvENG" — Herschelle Gibbs (@hershybru) March 5, 2026
Yuvraj Singh, a former World Cup-winning all-rounder, also shared his thoughts on Sanju's innings, describing it as 'calm, composed yet destructive'.
Irfan Pathan, another former Indian all-rounder, praised Samson's ability to take charge in crucial matches, stating, "That was a brilliant play by Sanju Samson. When you are in form, you take the responsibility to score in big games. He did that. #INDvsENG" — Irfan Pathan (@IrfanPathan) March 5, 2026
Priyank Panchal, a stalwart in Indian domestic cricket, remarked, "Sanju always had the talent. What last innings has done is given him confidence second to none. This shows that an in-form player is always going to win you more games when he has belief soaring high for him. What a brilliant strategic move to get him back in the XI #INDvENG."
Record-Breaking Achievements
Samson's performance against England was historic, as he matched the record for the most runs by an Indian in a T20 World Cup knockout match, previously set by Virat Kohli, who scored 89* in 47 balls against the West Indies in the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinal at the same venue.
The record for the highest score in T20 World Cup knockouts was recently set by New Zealand's Finn Allen, who scored an astonishing 100* in just 33 balls while chasing 170 against South Africa at Kolkata's Eden Gardens, marking the fastest century in both T20 and 50-over World Cups.
Samson has excelled against slower deliveries in this tournament, amassing 71 runs off 28 balls at an average of 35.30 and a strike rate of 253.57, hitting five fours and seven sixes. Notably, slower deliveries have been a challenge for India throughout this T20 World Cup.
With 16 sixes in this edition, Samson surpassed Rohit Sharma's previous record of 15 sixes in the 2024 edition, achieving the most sixes by an Indian in a single T20 World Cup.
