Samson's Stellar Performance

Virat Kohli, the renowned Indian cricketer, praised Sanju Samson for his outstanding display during the T20 World Cup 2026, which earned him the prestigious 'Player of the Tournament' title and allowed him to surpass several of Kohli's records.

A Remarkable Comeback

After struggling with just 46 runs in five challenging innings against New Zealand and being replaced by Ishan Kishan, Sanju made an unexpected and impressive comeback. Following two solid starts against Namibia and Zimbabwe, he truly excelled in crucial matches. His performances included a remarkable 97* against West Indies in the virtual quarterfinal, followed by scores of 89 against England and another 89 in the finals against New Zealand, showcasing his exceptional hitting ability and silencing critics regarding his previous inconsistencies.

'You Delivered When It Mattered'

On Instagram, Virat expressed his admiration, stating, "What a remarkable tournament from the most deserving man of the tournament @sanjusamson. You performed when it mattered the most. Really happy for you chetta."

Record-Breaking Achievements

Samson accumulated a total of 321 runs across five innings, boasting an impressive average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37, including 27 fours and 24 sixes. He finished as the third-highest run-scorer of the tournament, surpassing Kohli's previous record of 319 runs from the 2014 T20 World Cup for the most runs by an Indian in a single edition. However, Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan claimed the top spot with 383 runs at an average of 76.60.

Joining an Elite Group

Samson's exceptional performance not only placed him above Kohli in terms of runs scored in a single T20 World Cup but also positioned him alongside Kohli and Shahid Afridi as one of the few players to score fifties in both the semifinal and final of the T20 World Cup. His score surpassed Marlon Samuels' 85* in the 2016 final and Kane Williamson's 85 in the 2021 final, marking him as the Indian with the highest score in a T20 World Cup knockout match. He also matched Kohli and Afridi as the third player to achieve fifties in both semifinal and final matches.

Final Match Overview: India vs New Zealand

In the final match, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. However, Abhishek Sharma's return to form with a record-breaking fifty (52 runs off 21 balls) and his 98-run partnership with Samson made New Zealand regret their decision. Samson later partnered with Ishan Kishan (54 runs off 25 balls) to help India surpass the 200-run mark by the 16th over. After a brief slowdown, Shivam Dube contributed valuable runs, finishing with 26* off 8 balls, leading India to a total of 255/5, the highest score in T20 World Cup finals. James Neesham was New Zealand's top bowler with figures of 3/46.

In response, New Zealand struggled in their chase of 256 runs, with Axar Patel (3/23) and Jasprit Bumrah (4/15) dismantling their batting lineup to leave them at 72/5. Despite a half-century from Tim Seifert (52 runs off 26 balls), New Zealand was unable to recover, ultimately being bowled out for just 159 runs.
