Sanju Samson, the wicketkeeper-batter for Team India, has made a bold statement about his approach to international cricket, asserting that he will play strictly on his own terms moving forward.

His journey in international cricket has been marked by fluctuations in team selection, but he has recently established himself as a key player, especially after contributing significantly to India's T20 World Cup victory. Over the last few years, the 31-year-old has consistently been part of India's T20I lineup, securing a permanent position as an opener.

Despite facing a setback due to a decline in form during the T20I series against Ireland and Zimbabwe, which led to his exclusion from the recent squad, Samson remains undeterred and focused on his long-term aspirations without succumbing to external pressures.

Samson's Decision to Step Back from Pressure

Following his success in the T20 World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament, Samson has expressed his desire to avoid being overwhelmed by external expectations and the ongoing competition for selection.

In a recent interview on JioStar's show 'Believe', he stated, "I recognized the ongoing rat race in our country and decided before the 2026 T20 World Cup that I would not participate in it. I simply want to enjoy the game. By God's grace, I have accomplished a lot."

He further emphasized, "At 31, I have a few years left, and I intend to play on my own terms. No one will dictate how I should bat or what I should do. Sanju will make decisions for himself."

Reflecting on Achievements and Future Plans

Samson was initially left out of India's playing XI for the T20 World Cup due to underwhelming performances in the New Zealand T20I series. However, he rose to prominence during the tournament, delivering crucial performances in the Super 8, semifinal, and final matches against West Indies, England, and New Zealand, ultimately helping India retain the trophy on home soil.

His impressive tally of 321 runs during his first T20 World Cup made him India's top run-scorer and one of the standout players of the tournament, solidifying his place in Indian cricket history.

Discussing his career, the Kerala cricketer noted that he no longer worries about future selection cycles or looks too far ahead. He believes that his accomplishments at the international level are secure, regardless of his current team status.

"With all due respect, I will play, enjoy the game, be a supportive teammate, but I will do it my way. After the 2024 World Cup, I didn't even anticipate being part of the 2026 World Cup. At one point, I wasn't even in the 14- or 15-man squad," he remarked.

"So how can I plan for 2028? If I'm needed and performing well, things will align. If not, I am deeply grateful. No one can take this achievement away from me," he concluded.

Upcoming Challenges

Samju Samson has been representing India since 2015, making his debut against Zimbabwe. His career has been characterized by intermittent appearances and long breaks between matches before finally securing a steady role at the top of the batting order.

He is set to return to the field for the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, where Team India will aim to defend the gold medal they won in 2022 in Hangzhou.
