Concerns Raised Over Trade Agreement
Sanjay Raut, a member of the Shiv Sena UBT, asserted on Tuesday that the recently announced India-US trade agreement primarily benefits Gautam Adani, the chairman of the Adani Group. He further claimed that this deal compromises national interests and the welfare of farmers. The agreement is expected to reduce American tariffs on Indian goods by 18%, which could benefit sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and engineering. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Raut stated, "The entire opposition walked out of the Rajya Sabha. This agreement undermines national and farmers' interests. I believe this trade deal is designed to protect Gautam Adani, and we will protest against it from the streets to Parliament."
Economic Priorities Questioned
Echoing similar concerns, Arvind Sawant referenced the central budget to question the government's economic priorities. He remarked, "Have you seen your budget? It imposes zero percent duty. All goods are coming from the US. The US imposes a 10% tariff on Pakistan, while it previously charged us only 3%."
Trump's Announcement on Trade Agreement
In a social media post today, US President Donald Trump announced that both nations have agreed on a trade deal that will lower reciprocal tariffs from 25% to 18%. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to social media to declare that tariffs on 'Made in India' products will now be reduced to 18%, expressing heartfelt thanks to President Trump on behalf of India's 1.4 billion citizens for this significant announcement.
