Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi Nominate for AITA Elections, Leander Paes Excluded

In a pivotal move for Indian tennis, Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi have submitted their nominations for the upcoming AITA elections, aiming to enhance player representation. Meanwhile, Leander Paes has chosen not to participate, impacting his chances for the presidency. This article explores the candidates, their motivations, and the potential changes in tennis administration as experienced players seek to influence the sport's governance.

Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi's Candidacy in AITA Elections

In a significant development aimed at enhancing player representation in Indian tennis administration, renowned players Sania Mirza and former world number one Mahesh Bhupathi have submitted their nominations for the elections of the All India Tennis Association (AITA). Their objective is to ensure that players have a voice in the General Assembly and the Executive Committee. However, Leander Paes, another legendary figure in Indian tennis, has opted not to file his nomination for these elections, which diminishes his chances of competing for the AITA presidency.

The Bengal Tennis Association publicly endorsed Leander Paes as a candidate for the AITA presidency. Despite this support, his candidacy did not progress in the electoral process. Paes is the only player listed in Tier-1 among the 40 players but did not submit his nomination for extraordinary qualification players, which has now eliminated his chances of running for the presidency. According to the current regulations, he is also ineligible to contest as a state representative.

Paes can still participate in the AITA elections scheduled for November 27 as a representative from Bengal, but he cannot run for the presidency due to the revised constitutional provisions. The amended AITA constitution specifies eligibility criteria for candidates for the positions of president, secretary-general, and treasurer. To qualify, candidates must meet at least one of three conditions: they must be representatives of extraordinary qualification players, have completed a full term in the AITA Executive Committee, or have held a position as president, secretary, or treasurer in a state-affiliated tennis unit.

Bhupathi emphasized the importance of experienced players in tennis administration, stating that their presence is crucial for any sports federation. He believes that such players can bring necessary changes to the sports system, drawing parallels with badminton, where Pullela Gopichand has played a pivotal role in transforming the sport.

The nomination list includes not only Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi but also six other former players, such as Ankita Bhambri, current Davis Cup coach Ashutosh Singh, Gaurav Nantekar, Janaki Krishnamurthy, Shalini Thakur Chawla, and current Billie Jean King Cup captain Vishal Uppal. All these individuals have put forth their candidacy in the extraordinary qualification players' category.

For the executive committee, five candidates have submitted their nominations, including Mahesh Bhupathi, Sania Mirza, Ankita Bhambri, Janaki Krishnamurthy, and Vishal Uppal.

The revised AITA constitution allows for four representatives of extraordinary qualification players in the General Assembly, comprising two men and two women. Additionally, the 15-member executive committee will include two representatives from this category, one male and one female. This arrangement aims to ensure the participation of players who have represented the country at the international level and have made a name for themselves through their performances. The role of players in the governance of national sports federations is increasingly recognized as essential.

The Impact of Experienced Players in Tennis Administration

Mahesh Bhupathi is regarded as one of the most successful players in Indian tennis history. He has previously held the title of world number one in doubles and has won multiple Grand Slam titles throughout his career. Similarly, Sania Mirza has also been a top player in women's doubles, securing six Grand Slam titles in both women's and mixed doubles competitions. Their remarkable achievements in international tennis have established both players as prominent figures in Indian sports.

As the AITA elections approach, it will be crucial to observe how the involvement of experienced players influences the administration of the organization.
