Samik Bhattacharya Takes Charge as BJP President in West Bengal
On Thursday, Samik Bhattacharya was unanimously elected as the new president of the West Bengal BJP. The senior party leader was declared elected unopposed, as no other candidates submitted nominations by the deadline on Wednesday. Bhattacharya filed his nomination papers at the BJP office in Salt Lake, accompanied by outgoing state president Sukanta Majumdar and the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.

A senior BJP leader had previously stated that the 61-year-old Rajya Sabha MP would be declared elected unopposed as he was the sole candidate for the position. The formal announcement was made during a ceremony at Science City in Kolkata, attended by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who presented Bhattacharya with the election certificate. Outgoing president Sukanta Majumdar remarked to a news agency, "This is a continuous relay race... Previously, the fight was under my leadership; now it will continue under a new president... We will keep fighting to uproot the Mamata Banerjee government."

The election process for the new state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party commenced on Wednesday, just a day after the official election schedule was made public. In a statement, party election officer and MLA Deepak Barman noted, "The organizational festival of the BJP in West Bengal has reached its final stage. Today, in the last phase, 60 workers submitted nominations to become members of the national council at the state headquarters. All nominations have been accepted. Only one procedurally valid nomination was filed for the state president position, which has also been accepted."
