Sambit Patra Criticizes Mamata Banerjee Over Threats to Amit Shah
Political Tensions Rise in West Bengal
On Wednesday, Sambit Patra, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), launched a fierce attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of threatening not only Union Home Minister Amit Shah but the entire nation. This confrontation followed a heated debate between Shah and Banerjee regarding illegal immigration and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. During a press conference, Patra stated that Banerjee had issued threats to the Home Minister, claiming, "You were hiding inside a hotel. If we had wanted, you wouldn't have been able to step outside, and you are fortunate we allowed you to leave the hotel." This is not the first instance of such behavior.
Patra further asserted that Banerjee is not just threatening Amit Shah but is also endangering India. He expressed confidence that the BJP would secure a two-thirds majority in West Bengal. He accused Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters of being responsible for the deaths of over 300 BJP workers and of providing shelter to illegal immigrants. He emphasized that Banerjee is troubled by the removal of immigrant names from the voter list, claiming she has devastated West Bengal.
Additionally, Patra supported Shah's allegations that the West Bengal government is not providing land for fencing. He reiterated Shah's statement that corruption, injustice, and illegal immigration are rampant in Bengal, and that the Mamata government is obstructing efforts to secure the border. The removal of immigrant names from the voter list has caused significant distress for Banerjee and her party leaders.
As the political battle intensifies ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, both Amit Shah and Mamata Banerjee have exchanged sharp criticisms. Shah accused the TMC government of fostering an environment of fear and corruption for the past 14 years, questioning Banerjee's stance on illegal immigration. He also charged her government with refusing to provide land for border fencing.
In his address, Amit Shah stated, "Corruption under Mamata Banerjee's leadership has stalled West Bengal's development. All welfare schemes initiated by Modi have fallen victim to toll syndicates. For the last 14 years, fear and corruption have defined West Bengal's identity." He concluded by promising that after April 15, 2026, when the BJP forms the government in West Bengal, they will work to revive the state's heritage and culture, emphasizing the significance of 'Banga Bhumi' as it was founded by the great leader Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee.
