Sam Konstas Shines with Century in Sheffield Shield Match
Konstas Leads NSW with a Stellar Performance
On the opening day of the Sheffield Shield 2025-26 clash between New South Wales and Queensland at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australian opener Sam Konstas delivered an impressive century, marking his first in nearly 14 months, according to reports from Wisden.
Key Partnerships Fuel NSW's Innings
Despite not being included in the Australian Test squad for the initial two matches against England in the ongoing Ashes series, Konstas formed a solid 112-run opening partnership with Matthew Gilkes, who scored 55 runs before being dismissed by Gurinder Sandhu of Queensland. Konstas reached his half-century and eventually completed his century off 161 balls.
The right-handed batsman then collaborated with Kurtis Patterson to build a remarkable 130-run partnership for the second wicket. Konstas was eventually caught and bowled by Tom Whitney, concluding his innings at 116 runs, which included nine boundaries and a six.
Recent Achievements and Form
This century marks Konstas' first first-class hundred since he scored 109 runs off 144 balls against India A during Australia A's tour in September. It also represents his first Sheffield Shield century since achieving twin hundreds against South Australia in October 2024, which was only his fifth first-class match.
In the current Sheffield Shield season, Konstas has emerged as the leading scorer for New South Wales, amassing 339 runs in 11 innings at an average of 57.36, including one century and one fifty.
NSW Ends Day 1 Strongly
Thanks to Konstas' remarkable century, New South Wales concluded Day 1 with a score of 313/4 after 90 overs against Queensland. At stumps, Lachlan Shaw remained not out on 25 runs off 82 balls, while captain Jack Edwards contributed 31 runs off 59 deliveries.
In addition to Konstas and Gilkes, Kurtis Patterson also played a vital role, scoring 63 runs off 106 balls, featuring seven boundaries. For Queensland, the wicket-takers included Gurinder Sandhu (1/56), Tom Straker (1/39), Tom Whitney (1/50), and Sam Geyer (1/60).
