Raha, May 2: The issue of illegally parked vehicles on roads has tragically claimed lives, yet the authorities tasked with overseeing these violations seem to be inactive.
For an extended period, the unregulated parking of trucks along both sides of National Highway-37 in Raha has posed a significant safety risk for both commuters and local inhabitants.
Residents have reported that trucks are frequently parked along the highway, particularly near dhabas, fuel stations, and market areas in Dighaliati, Jongal Balahu Garh, Saragaon close to the toll plaza in Raha, and on the Dimow flyover.
This parking situation narrows the roadway, compelling two-wheelers, cars, and buses to maneuver around the parked trucks, thereby heightening the chances of accidents.
Local inhabitants have expressed that the situation deteriorates at night when numerous trucks park without adequate reflectors or lights.
“We live in constant fear of accidents. School buses and ambulances also struggle to pass during peak hours,” a resident shared.
Numerous accidents and traffic jams have been reported in these regions due to the chaotic parking of trucks.
The absence of consistent monitoring by law enforcement has allowed this issue to persist, as truck drivers often stop for extended periods to rest or await loading instructions.
Upon inquiry, a representative from the district Transport department acknowledged the problem.
“We are prepared to collaborate with the highway patrol and local police to pinpoint no-parking areas and enforce regulations strictly. Fines will be levied on offenders,” the official stated.
Conversely, truck drivers have called for the establishment of designated truck lay-bys and terminals situated away from the main roadway near the Raha toll plaza.
They also requested improved lighting and signage from the national highways authority to avert accidents.
Residents remain apprehensive that without the implementation of permanent solutions, including regular police enforcement, the national highway will continue to be a hotspot for accidents due to irresponsibly parked vehicles.
