Safety Concerns May Halt Shri Khand Mahadev Yatra 2026

The Shri Khand Mahadev Yatra 2026 is under serious threat of cancellation due to safety concerns raised by an expert committee. Key sections of the pilgrimage route have been deemed too dangerous for public access, prompting the district administration to prioritize the safety of devotees. A detailed assessment revealed unstable terrain, increasing risks of landslides and flash floods, and the need for a comprehensive geological investigation before future pilgrimages can be considered. As the final decision looms, the administration remains committed to ensuring the safety of all participants in this challenging trek.

One of the most esteemed yet physically challenging pilgrimages in Himachal Pradesh may be suspended this year. An expert committee has determined that significant portions of the Shri Khand Mahadev route have become too perilous for public access.

A definitive decision is still pending, but the recommendation has cast serious doubt on the upcoming Shri Khand Mahadev Yatra 2026, with the district administration prioritizing the safety of pilgrims.

This issue was discussed during a meeting of the Shri Khand Mahadev Yatra Trust, led by Kullu Deputy Commissioner Anurag Chandra Sharma, where members evaluated the results of a thorough field assessment conducted by technical experts.

The survey, executed by a collaborative team from the Revenue and Forest Departments alongside specialists from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), revealed that the most critical segment of the trek—from Bhim Dwari to Parvati Bagh—has become increasingly unstable.

The assessment indicated that the terrain is characterized by fragile mountain slopes, loose rocks, eroded pathways, and numerous seasonal streams, all of which are anticipated to become significantly more dangerous with the onset of the monsoon. Experts cautioned that landslides, rockfalls, flash floods, and sudden water surges could pose serious risks to the thousands of pilgrims undertaking this high-altitude trek.

Notably, the expert panel concluded that the pilgrimage cannot be endorsed under the current conditions, labeling the risk level as unacceptably high.

The report also dismissed the proposed alternative route, stating it does not provide any meaningful safety benefits compared to the existing path. Furthermore, the committee highlighted that any emergency evacuation or rescue operation in the vulnerable area would be exceedingly challenging due to the difficult terrain and unstable landscape.

Compounding these concerns, the camping site at Bhim Dwari has been identified as a potential flash-flood zone. Experts noted that the geological conditions of the area—characterized by loose boulders and unstable soil—render even temporary protective measures, such as rope bridges or makeshift crossings, unsafe and technically impractical.

To find a long-term solution, the panel has suggested a comprehensive geological investigation by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) or another specialized scientific institution before future pilgrimages are contemplated.

During the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Anurag Chandra Sharma emphasized that the administration would not compromise on the safety of devotees under any circumstances. He encouraged Trust members to submit written feedback on the expert report before the administration makes a final decision regarding the pilgrimage.

The Shri Khand Mahadev Yatra is considered one of the most arduous religious treks in the country. Starting from Nirmand in Kullu district, pilgrims traverse nearly 32 kilometers through steep mountainous terrain to reach the naturally formed 75-foot Shivling, situated at an altitude of approximately 19,000 feet. This pilgrimage traditionally draws thousands of devotees every July, but its challenging geography has also rendered it one of the most hazardous religious journeys in the Himalayas.
