Protest Highlights Issues Faced by Safai Karamcharis

Sivasagar, June 22: Safai karamcharis organized a demonstration in Sivasagar on Sunday, voicing concerns regarding alleged misappropriation of vehicles and resources intended for their welfare.

More than 200 individuals gathered at a local hall to deliberate on the challenges faced by the workers. Before the meeting, they conducted a rally at Shivadoul, chanting slogans and displaying images of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Lachit Borphukan.

The assembly addressed various concerns, including salary issues and the alleged corruption surrounding resources allocated for safai karamcharis. Several resolutions were reportedly passed during the discussions.

Participants included members from various safai karamchari organizations, such as the Harijan Mazoor Union, and representatives from districts like Bongaigaon, Mariani, Tinsukia, Nazira, and Simaluguri.

The protestors expressed their desire to meet with the Chief Minister to discuss their grievances and requested a direct appointment.

“Many are unaware of the corruption and irregularities concerning funds and resources designated for safai karamcharis. There is substantial evidence of these irregularities in Sivasagar alone,” one protestor stated.

He accused council representatives of downplaying the issues faced by the workers, claiming they misrepresent the situation to higher authorities.

“They manage to present a false narrative by taking pictures with people to suggest that everything is fine with the safai karamcharis. This is far from the truth,” another protestor added.

They mentioned having more information to share directly with the Chief Minister.

“We are hesitant to disclose everything to the media,” one protestor remarked.

The protestors criticized the government for focusing on the Opposition instead of addressing the public's issues.

“The government seems more interested in targeting the Congress party. Who will support the BJP in the 2026 elections? Is it the Congress or us? Shouldn't the BJP prioritize our needs?” the protestors expressed passionately.

They warned that if their concerns are not addressed by the Chief Minister within two months, they would be forced to escalate their protest and undertake a hunger strike against the government's inaction.
