Sachin Pilot Emphasizes Unity in Congress Ahead of 2028 Elections
Pilot Advocates for Collective Action Against BJP
New Delhi: On Wednesday, Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot expressed that he holds no personal grudges against senior party member Ashok Gehlot. He emphasized the importance of unity among party leaders in Rajasthan to effectively challenge the BJP in the upcoming 2028 Assembly elections.
In a recent interview, Pilot acknowledged Gehlot's seniority, stating that the former chief minister has the freedom to express his views, which he finds acceptable.
When questioned about any promises made regarding the chief ministerial position, Pilot clarified that politics is not about guarantees. He stated, "There are no promises in politics. It's all situational. I have served in various roles, including as a member of Parliament and deputy chief minister, and I will contribute wherever the party needs me most."
Pilot mentioned his willingness to campaign in various states, including Kerala and Assam, and expressed enjoyment in fulfilling his responsibilities.
Addressing Gehlot's past comments directed at him, Pilot remarked that differences of opinion do not equate to personal animosity. He reiterated his respect for Gehlot, highlighting their collaborative efforts.
Pilot stressed the necessity for the Congress party to unite in opposition, stating, "To secure a victory in Rajasthan in December 2028, we must all collaborate. We are up against a powerful government at both the state and national levels, which is misusing agencies and police. Our collective effort is crucial."
Regarding his ambitions for the chief minister role, Pilot emphasized that the party must first achieve a majority in the elections. He noted, "After that, discussions about leadership positions will follow. Winning upcoming state elections is essential for a successful Lok Sabha campaign in 2029."
In June, Gehlot had revisited Pilot's 2020 dissent and remarked on the internal disagreements among MLAs concerning Pilot's potential rise to chief minister. A significant meeting in September 2022 was disrupted by Gehlot's supporters, who opposed Pilot's elevation.
Despite Gehlot's critical remarks, Pilot chose not to respond publicly. Recently, a light-hearted exchange between the two leaders went viral, showcasing their camaraderie.
Pilot has previously indicated a willingness to support Gehlot's son, Vaibhav Gehlot, in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, signaling a thaw in their previously strained relationship.
Following the events of September 2022, Pilot took on the role of general secretary and has actively campaigned in several states, contributing to the Congress's recent success in Kerala.
