A Matter of Pride

Ryan Williams, an Indian footballer, expressed that representing India is a significant source of "pride" for him. He is committed to aiding the national team in improving its FIFA rankings. Williams is notably the second player, following Arata Izumi, to change his nationality and play for India, a journey he attributes to his diverse experiences in Australia, England, and India.

Significance of the Indian Jersey

In a conversation, Williams emphasized the importance of wearing the Indian jersey, which symbolizes 1.4 billion people and holds deep meaning for his family. He stated, "Pride is the first word that comes to mind. To represent such a vast population is special, and doing so through football is a joy that's hard to articulate."

A Journey Across Continents

Originally from Australia, Ryan transitioned to England, where he played for clubs like Portsmouth, Fulham, Oxford United, and Rotherham United. He returned to the A-League in 2023, joining Bengaluru FC after a stint with Perth Glory in the 2022-23 season. Williams, whose mother hails from Mumbai, renounced his Australian citizenship to qualify for international play with India. He made a remarkable debut for the Blue Tigers, scoring just four minutes after entering the match against Hong Kong in an AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier, marking the fastest goal by a debutant for the Indian men's national team.

Overcoming Doubts

Reflecting on his nationality switch, Williams noted that the decision was straightforward for him, despite others claiming it was impossible. He stated, "I wouldn't say it was a difficult choice. I am driven and knew what I wanted and what it would take." The process of obtaining an Indian passport took nearly two years, during which he faced numerous challenges but remained focused on his goal.

Persistence Pays Off

Williams shared that many doubted his aspirations, but he was determined to prove them wrong. He remarked, "To get one over them and say, look at me now, I've got the passport and I've played for India, is a great feeling." His experiences in Australia and England equipped him to tackle the challenges of representing India, as he has encountered various football styles and environments.
