Russia Dismisses Claims of Iran's Nuclear Weapons Development Amid Middle East Tensions
Lavrov Challenges US and Israeli Claims
On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Moscow has not found any credible proof indicating that Iran is pursuing the development of nuclear weapons. He dismissed this assertion as the primary rationale used by the United States and Israel for their ongoing military actions. Lavrov made these remarks during a speech in Brunei, where he stated, “We still see no evidence that Iran was developing nuclear weapons, which was the main, if not the only, justification for the war,” thereby questioning the narrative promoted by Washington and Tel Aviv. He also pointed out the extensive repercussions of the military operations, particularly the human and economic impacts on Arab nations in the region.
IAEA Reports No Damage to Iranian Nuclear Facilities
UN Nuclear Watchdog: No Damage Seen at Iran’s Nuclear Sites
During a special session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors, Director General Rafael Grossi stated that there is no evidence indicating that Iranian nuclear sites, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and the Tehran Research Reactor, have sustained damage from recent strikes. This comes despite Tehran's claims of an attack on the Natanz enrichment facility. Grossi called for all involved parties to exercise caution to avoid escalation and nuclear safety risks, as reported by a news agency. Iran's representative to the IAEA insisted that the Natanz site had indeed been targeted, but the IAEA maintained that there was no evidence of damage or abnormal radiation levels.
Continued Military Operations and Regional Tensions
Officials from Israel and the US continue to assert that a primary goal of their military operations is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities. In a statement at the United Nations, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon reiterated that stopping a nuclear-armed Iran is a key objective of their campaign, while expressing sorrow over any civilian casualties. When asked if Iranian nuclear sites would be targeted, he stated, "One of the goals of this joint operation is to ensure that they don't have nuclear capabilities to threaten the entire world... We will do whatever is necessary to make sure they don't have nuclear capability." He added, "I don't have the exact information, but I will tell you that we regret the loss of life of any civilian, and we pray for the people of Iran, but we have the intelligence and we target military assets. That's what we do. The Iranians, they do exactly the opposite."
Wider Regional Conflict and Its Implications
The conflict has escalated throughout the region, with reports of missile and drone exchanges involving Iran, Israel, Hezbollah, and Gulf states. Recent military actions have impacted bases in Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, as well as attacks within Israel and Lebanon. The global oil market has reacted to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to increased international calls for de-escalation.
