Rohit Sharma Addresses Retirement Speculation

Indian opener Rohit Sharma has dismissed any concerns regarding his potential retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). He stated that the external discussions about his future do not affect him as long as he continues to contribute positively to the team's performance. In a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following India's ODI series loss to England, the seasoned player emphasized that outside opinions have never swayed his game approach.

'The Noise Doesn't Matter'

"My responsibility lies with my performance on the field. I am here to play and represent my country and team. This has been my focus since my debut, and it will remain so. The external noise has always existed, and it will continue as long as I play. However, it doesn't significantly impact me," Rohit remarked.

"What truly matters is my contribution to the team's success. That's where my focus is directed right now. Let the noise persist; if there’s no noise, there’s no excitement. My role is on the field, while theirs is outside. That's my perspective on it," he added.

Historic Century at Lord's

These comments came after speculation arose that the third ODI at Lord's might signify the end of Rohit's ODI career. Instead, the 39-year-old cricketer responded emphatically by scoring a remarkable 138 runs off 110 balls, becoming the first Indian to achieve an ODI century at the historic venue. This marked his 34th ODI century, featuring 17 fours and five sixes, and set a record for the highest individual ODI score by an Indian against England in England, surpassing his previous unbeaten score of 137 at Trent Bridge in 2018.

Disappointment Despite Personal Achievement

Despite reaching this personal milestone, Rohit expressed disappointment as India fell short by 27 runs while chasing a challenging target of 388, resulting in a 2-1 series defeat to England. He stated, "I feel a bit let down by the outcome because I believe we played some excellent cricket. Our performance in Birmingham was commendable, but we fell short in Cardiff. We needed more runs on the board there."

"In this match, we faced a significant target. We did our best with the bat but still came up 20-25 runs short. It's important to recognize that some players are still gaining experience in ODI cricket, and they need time to adjust. However, we must learn from this experience and improve for future situations," he added.

Enjoying the Challenge of Playing in England

Rohit also shared his love for playing in England, stating, "I truly enjoy playing here. The atmosphere, the grounds, and the pitches present unique challenges. As a cricketer, you always seek challenges, and England offers that in various formats."

Partnerships with Gill and Kohli

During the chase, India seemed to be on track as Rohit and captain Shubman Gill formed a solid opening partnership of 147 runs, followed by a 113-run collaboration with Virat Kohli. Reflecting on batting with Kohli, Rohit said, "Having him in the middle is always enjoyable. We've played our entire careers together, and we understand each other well. There was a lot of communication between us while batting, which is always beneficial."

Earlier, England set a formidable target by scoring 387/3, thanks to Ben Duckett's 141, Jacob Bethell's 91, Joe Root's unbeaten 74, and Jos Buttler's 41 not out. Although Rohit, Gill (77), and Kohli (74) laid a strong foundation, India faced a dramatic collapse from 304/2, with Sam Curran taking four wickets to secure the series for England.

'Emphasis on Team Improvement'

Looking forward, Rohit emphasized the importance of collective team improvement over individual achievements. "I enjoyed my time in the middle, but I am disappointed with the result. We couldn't secure a win. Moving forward, we need to focus on how we can enhance our performance as a team, rather than just as individuals. It's about the collective effort that will drive our success," he concluded.
