Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton: The Dynamic Duo for Mumbai Indians
Rohit-Rickelton Partnership Crucial for MI
Anil Kumble, the former captain of India, has emphasized the importance of the opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in their upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) this Sunday evening.
During a discussion on Star Sports, Kumble noted that Rohit's return to the team has significantly uplifted Mumbai's prospects, especially after he scored over 80 runs against the Lucknow Super Giants, despite having missed several matches due to a hamstring injury. Kumble remarked, "MI has received a substantial boost with Rohit Sharma's comeback. In his last match against Lucknow, he returned after a five-match absence and immediately made an impact with an 80-plus score, as if he had never left the lineup."
Kumble praised Rohit for his remarkable performance following a long break from the team, stating, "It is quite challenging for any player to sit out for five games and then deliver such a significant performance, particularly while chasing a target of over 225 runs."
He highlighted that MI's success against Bengaluru will largely hinge on the aggressive approach of Rohit and Rickelton during the power play. This season, Rohit has accumulated 221 runs in five matches, averaging 55.25 with a strike rate of 174.01, including two half-centuries. Meanwhile, Rickelton has scored 380 runs in eight innings, averaging 54.28 with a strike rate of 190.95, featuring a century and two fifties. Together, they have amassed 376 runs in five innings at an impressive average of 94 and a run rate of 12.19, while other MI opening combinations have only contributed 123 runs at an average of 24.6 and a run rate of 9.11, according to Cricbuzz.
Kumble concluded, "Against RCB, MI's chances will heavily rely on the performance of their opening duo, Rohit and Ryan Rickelton. Both are in exceptional form, and if they maintain their current batting style, Mumbai will have a strong opportunity to avenge their previous loss to Bengaluru."
Jasprit Bumrah's Comeback
Kumble also expressed confidence in premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah regaining his form in this high-stakes match. He stated, "Jasprit Bumrah will be eager to perform well. This season hasn't been his best, possibly due to mental fatigue. However, with only a few matches remaining, Bumrah won't find a better opportunity than this 'Revenge Week' game to get back into his rhythm."
