He will participate in an exhibition match alongside other tennis legends, including Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt. Federer to Headline Inaugural AO Opening Ceremony

Tennis icon Roger Federer is set to make a comeback at the Australian Open 2026, participating in an exhibition match alongside fellow ATP No. 1 members, including Andre Agassi, Patrick Rafter, and Lleyton Hewitt, as reported by Olympics.com.


The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, January 17, at the iconic Rod Laver Arena, with the main draw of the Australian Open commencing on January 18.


'Happy Slam' Memories

"It feels like ages since I first called it the 'Happy Slam' for the Australian Open, and it still brings a smile to my face when I recall all the moments I've experienced here," Federer, a six-time champion at the Australian Open, stated in a press release. "I've felt a range of emotions on Rod Laver Arena... The joy of lifting 'Norman' [the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup] six times, the privilege of playing in front of Rod Laver himself, the thrill of competing against my fiercest rivals, and the unwavering love and support from Australian fans."


"Winning the AO in 2017 is among my most cherished Grand Slam memories, and following it up with another victory in 2018 was a dream realized in Melbourne. I eagerly anticipate returning to the AO to create more unforgettable moments with all the Aussie fans."


A 'Spectacular' Start to the Season

Tournament director Craig Tiley expressed his excitement, stating, "I am delighted to announce this unique AO Opening Ceremony. While the AO is known for its innovative spirit and pushing boundaries, we also honor a proud 120-year legacy filled with some of the sport's greatest champions."

Federer, now 44, last played at the Australian Open in 2020 against his longtime rival Novak Djokovic before announcing his retirement in 2022.
