Riyan Parag Shines Despite Rajasthan Royals' Loss to Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026
Riyan Parag's Performance Amidst Team Challenges
Riyan Parag, the captain of Rajasthan Royals (RR), celebrated his first fifty of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, acknowledging that while he remains unfazed by external criticism, his primary duty is to secure runs and victories for his team. He achieved this milestone against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Friday in Jaipur.
Delhi Capitals Triumph in High-Scoring Match
In a thrilling encounter, DC ended their three-match losing streak with a decisive seven-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals. The match featured a remarkable 110-run opening partnership between KL Rahul, who scored 75 off 40 balls, and Pathum Nissanka, who contributed 62 off 33 balls, setting the stage for a record chase of 226 runs. Tristan Stubbs (18*) and Ashutosh Sharma (25*) completed the chase with five balls remaining.
Riyan Parag's Key Contributions
Earlier in the match, Parag showcased his leadership with an impressive 90 runs off 50 balls, marking his first fifty-plus score of the season. Donovan Ferreira also made a significant impact, scoring an unbeaten 47 runs off just 14 balls, helping RR post a total of 225/6 after opting to bat first. Parag steadied the innings alongside Dhruv Jurel, who scored 42, despite early setbacks. Mitchell Starc's return saw him take three wickets, including that of Parag.
Parag Reflects on the Match
Post-match, Parag expressed that the total was competitive, noting that the pitch had slowed down and a score of around 200 seemed reasonable. However, he pointed out that poor bowling, particularly the frequent boundary concessions, ultimately cost them the match. He elaborated on their strategy to manage hitters like Donovan Ferreira and to rotate the strike effectively against spin before targeting pace bowlers. "I don't need to respond to critics regarding my form; my responsibility is to score runs and secure points for the team. Although 200 was a par score, we bowled poorly and lost our way. We aimed to delay sending in our hitters and planned to target the seamers aggressively later on. Thankfully, my injury seems minor, just a tweak in the hamstring, and I have a week to recover," Parag stated.
Disciplinary Action for Vaping
In a separate incident, Parag faced a penalty of 25% of his match fee and received a demerit point after being caught vaping in the dressing room during the IPL match against Punjab Kings.
Delhi Capitals' Historic Achievement
This victory marks DC's highest successful run chase in IPL history, finishing the match with five balls to spare. Following a disappointing collapse in their previous match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, this performance was a remarkable comeback, securing the win with seven wickets in hand.
Current Standings in the Points Table
With this win, DC has achieved its fourth victory of the season, placing them sixth in the points table. Meanwhile, RR remains in fourth place with six wins out of ten matches. This chase also stands as the second-highest successful chase against RR, following the 229 runs chased by SRH at the same venue earlier this season.
