Rithika Sree: A Trailblazing Transgender Umpire's Journey in Cricket
Inspiring Journey of Rithika Sree
Rithika Sree, originally named Muthuraja, is a pioneering transgender cricket umpire from Salem who has become a beacon of hope by overcoming numerous obstacles in her officiating career. She embarked on her umpiring path in 2021 with the Salem Cricket Association and has since relocated to Coimbatore. In 2024, Rithika underwent gender-affirming surgery, marking a significant milestone in her life.
The Spark of Interest
Rithika's passion for umpiring ignited in 2019 while she was employed in Mohali, where the excitement of IPL matches inspired her to explore this profession. After researching the necessary steps to become an umpire, she returned to Salem during the COVID-19 lockdown after facing job losses in Punjab.
Taking the First Steps
In an interview, Rithika shared, "My name is Rithika Sree, and my journey began in 2019 while working in Mohali. Watching IPL matches sparked my desire to become an umpire. I researched online about the progression from district to state and then to BCCI panels. After losing my job in Punjab during the lockdown, I returned to Salem to pursue my dream."
Starting Her Umpiring Career
Upon returning to Salem, Rithika reached out to Jayaraman, the Chairman of the Salem District Association Umpire Committee, whom she found online. He offered her a chance, which marked the beginning of her umpiring career. Rithika recalled, "After contacting Jayaraman, he assured me of an opportunity, which was the start of my journey as an umpire."
Overcoming Challenges
Initially, Rithika faced criticism and made several mistakes in her umpiring. Discouraged by negative feedback, she considered quitting. However, Jayaraman's encouragement motivated her to persist. "He believed in my potential, which inspired me to continue and improve my skills," Rithika stated.
Acceptance and Support
Rithika eventually confided in Jayaraman's wife about her gender identity, fearing repercussions. However, she was reassured, and Jayaraman responded positively when informed. He emphasized the importance of supporting opportunities for the third gender and encouraged Rithika to pursue her career in umpiring.
A New Chapter in Coimbatore
In 2024, Rithika moved to Coimbatore for her surgery and informed Jayaraman of her transition. He promised to assist her in finding opportunities in Coimbatore after learning there were no vacancies in Salem. Through his connections, Rithika was introduced to Ramesh, the Umpire Committee Chairman of the Coimbatore District Cricket Association (CDCA), who welcomed her warmly.
Finding Her Place
Initially barred from the grounds, Rithika eventually gained entry with the support of the CDCA. Their trust in her abilities allowed her to officiate in ongoing league matches. "With the backing of the CDCA, I am now freely officiating in league games," Rithika expressed, highlighting her journey from exclusion to acceptance.
