Guwahati, Oct 25: Despite a heightened presence of Border Security Force (BSF) personnel along the India-Bangladesh border, there continues to be a significant influx of Bangladeshi nationals entering India, primarily through Meghalaya, often aided by local touts. Recent arrests across various locations in Assam, including Guwahati, highlight this ongoing issue.
Since April, authorities in Guwahati have detained nearly 100 Bangladeshi individuals who recently crossed into India, with an additional 15 apprehended by the Government Railway Police.
These individuals were found in various locations such as hotels, homestays, and railway stations while traveling from Meghalaya to Guwahati, and even at airports.
However, these arrests may only represent a small fraction of the actual number of illegal entries, as many more may be slipping through undetected. Police typically apprehend these individuals based on suspicion or specific intelligence.
In one notable incident, four Bangladeshi nationals were caught in Guwahati while attempting to return home via Meghalaya.
According to police sources, the detained individuals revealed that they did not cross through the Assam-Bangladesh border but primarily entered via Meghalaya.
Most of those arrested followed a common route, starting from Jaflong in Bangladesh and entering India through Dawki in Meghalaya.
To avoid detection, these individuals typically refrain from using public transportation when traveling from Meghalaya to Assam, opting instead for light motor vehicles. Interestingly, the recently apprehended individuals did not intend to remain in Assam but planned to disperse to various regions across the country.
They acknowledged the presence of touts operating on both sides of the border who assist in facilitating their illegal entry into India.
The ongoing illegal immigration of Bangladeshi nationals poses a significant security risk for India. It is widely recognized that several extremist groups are currently active in Bangladesh, and if these individuals can cross into India without hindrance, it raises concerns that extremist elements could also infiltrate the country, potentially leading to unrest.
