Rescue Operation in Manipur: Two Assam Men Freed from Captivity

Imphal, July 5: Two individuals from Assam, reportedly held as hostages due to an unpaid debt, have been successfully rescued from the Ukhrul district of Manipur, according to police reports released on Sunday.

The victims, identified as Kasob Kachari (29) and Ajay Gogoi (33), were located on July 3 in Changta village, following a well-coordinated operation by the Manipur Police.

As per the police statement, the operation was triggered by a complaint from the Titabar Police Station in Assam regarding the illegal detention of a person in Khamsom village, located in the Senapati district.

The complaint was filed by Munin Kachari from Jorhat, who claimed that on June 12, Dibyajyoti Saikia, also from Jorhat, had left the complainant's brother in Khamsom with an unknown individual as collateral for an unpaid debt stemming from financial transactions.

In response to the complaint, law enforcement initiated follow-up actions and successfully traced the two men to Changta village in Ukhrul district. Both were safely rescued and taken to the Senapati Police Station on Saturday, as reported by an officer.

Currently, no arrests have been made in relation to this incident, and investigations are ongoing.

In a related development, security forces uncovered a significant stockpile of weapons and ammunition during separate operations in Chandel and Thoubal districts on Saturday.

In the vicinity of Mombi village under the Molcham Police Station in Chandel district, authorities seized nine single-bore rifles, two 9 mm pistols with magazines, two improvised mortars, one stick hand grenade, and 94 rounds of various calibres of ammunition.

Additionally, another operation on the hilltop of Salungpham Uyok Ching under Heirok Police Station in Thoubal district led to the recovery of two Beretta pistols with magazines, two .32 pistols with magazines, two single-barrel guns, 12 grenades, seven magazines for different firearms, and 1,242 rounds of ammunition of various calibres.

Separately, the Manipur Police apprehended three suspected extortionists, believed to be active members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG), from various locations in Imphal East and Imphal West districts on Saturday.
