Renowned Photojournalist Raghu Rai Passes Away at 83

Raghu Rai, a legendary figure in Indian photography and photojournalism, passed away on Sunday at the age of 83. His family announced the news via social media. His last rites will take place at 4 PM today at the Lodhi crematorium in Delhi. Widely regarded as the 'father' of Indian photography, Rai immortalized numerous significant and historical events through his lens over a career spanning more than five decades.
Capturing History Through His Lens
Born in 1942 in Jhang, which is now in Pakistan, Rai embarked on his photography career in 1962. He captured some of the most poignant and critical moments in modern Indian history. His long association with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi allowed him to document many historic events during her tenure. His photography of Mother Teresa received global acclaim.
Rai's powerful images from the 1972 Bangladesh refugee crisis and the catastrophic Bhopal gas tragedy in 1984 left a profound impact on the world.

Following his passing, condolences have been pouring in from across the nation. Naveen Patnaik, the leader of the opposition in the Odisha Assembly and head of the Biju Janata Dal, expressed his sorrow on the social media platform X. He stated, "I am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of the eminent photojournalist Raghu Rai. Through his lens, he captured the essence of India, its people, and everyday life, which will forever remain etched in our collective memory."
Patnaik further remarked that Rai's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of storytellers and extended his heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers.
