Honoring a Visionary Leader


New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 110th birth anniversary of Biju Patnaik, the former Chief Minister of Odisha, reflecting on his significant contributions to the state's advancement.


In a post on X, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for Patnaik's unwavering commitment to Odisha's development and acknowledged his pivotal role in shaping the state's future.


PM Modi stated, "Today, on his birth anniversary, I pay my respects to Shri Biju Patnaik Ji and honor his dedication to enhancing Odisha's progress."


Biju Patnaik held the office of Chief Minister twice, first from 1961 to 1963 and again from 1990 to 1995. His leadership is credited with launching major industrial and infrastructure initiatives that greatly benefited the state's economy.


Among his key achievements were the creation of Paradip Port and the development of the Choudwar-Barbil industrial zones, which were instrumental in bolstering Odisha's industrial framework.


In addition to his focus on industrialization, Patnaik was a pioneer in advocating for women's reservations in local governance, a progressive move that was ahead of its time. His impactful leadership earned him the title of "Hero of Kalinga."


Beyond state politics, Biju Patnaik's legacy includes notable contributions during World War II and his influence on the global stage.


He is uniquely recognized as the only Indian leader whose remains were honored with the national flags of India, Russia, and Indonesia after his death, reflecting his international significance.


Earlier in the day, Naveen Patnaik, Biju Patnaik's son and the Leader of the Opposition in the Odisha Assembly, also paid tribute to his father.


In a message shared on X, Naveen Patnaik expressed, "On this birth anniversary of our beloved leader and pride of Odias, I extend my heartfelt tribute to former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik."


He emphasized that the late leader's ideals continue to motivate the members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). "Every BJD worker is committed to serving Odisha Ma, inspired by his vision of a united and prosperous Odisha," he added.


The Biju Janata Dal also honored Biju Patnaik through a post on X, referring to him as a brave son of Odisha who dedicated his life to the service of both the nation and the state.


"We pay homage to the courageous son of Odisha, the great people's hero, former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, on his birth anniversary. Like an eagle in a storm, he exemplified bravery in serving the nation; his relentless efforts aimed at elevating Odisha to greatness," the party stated.


The message concluded with a commitment: "Guided by his principles, the Biju Janata Dal remains unwavering in its dedication to the service of Odisha."
