Relief from Heatwave Expected in Northern and Central India
Weather Changes Ahead
Residents of northern and central India, currently enduring extreme heat and heatwaves, can look forward to some relief. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an active 'Western Disturbance' is set to bring significant changes to the weather in northwestern India. From now until June 13, areas including Delhi-NCR are likely to experience strong thunderstorms, lightning strikes, hail, and widespread rainfall. The IMD predicts that the most intense weather activity will occur on June 11 and 12, potentially providing a much-needed respite from rising temperatures. During this period, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds are expected in various regions, including Delhi-NCR and surrounding areas.
Rainfall Predictions
In the northeastern states and West Bengal, rainfall ranging from 7 to 20 centimeters is anticipated over the next five to seven days. The southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are also forecasted to receive heavy rainfall.
Recent Rainfall Reports
In the last 24 hours, rainfall between 12 to 20 centimeters has been recorded in parts of the Himalayan region, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall has also been reported in South Konkan, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Tripura, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Telangana.
Severe Weather Alerts
Reports indicate hailstorms in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and eastern Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, incidents of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds have been observed across various regions.
Forecast for Northern India
The IMD forecasts continued heatwave conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Due to the 'Western Disturbance', hail is also expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, prompting the IMD to issue an 'Orange Alert' for these areas. Dust storms are likely in parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, while thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds may occur in eastern India in the coming days.
Monsoon Progress
The southwest monsoon is expected to advance further into Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh over the next three to four days, with coverage extending to the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu.
Conditions Favorable for Monsoon
The IMD has noted that conditions are becoming favorable for the monsoon to progress further into parts of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. A low-pressure area over central India, aided by the Western Disturbance, is facilitating this advancement.
Temperature Changes Expected
Due to the influence of the Western Disturbance, no significant temperature changes are expected in northwestern India over the next 24 hours. However, a decrease of 3°C to 5°C is anticipated between June 11 and 13, followed by a gradual increase of 2°C to 4°C. In central India, temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable until June 12, after which a drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius may occur. In eastern India, minimal temperature changes are likely over the next two days, with a potential decrease of 2°C to 4°C between June 12 and 14.
Orange Alerts Issued
The IMD has issued Orange Alerts for eastern Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are expected in these areas, along with heavy rainfall in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, and Sikkim.
Heavy Rainfall in Other Regions
Other regions anticipating heavy rainfall include Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Telangana, Karnataka, South Konkan, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep. Wind speeds in parts of Karnataka, Goa, and Kerala are expected to reach 30-40 km/h.
