Severe Heatwave in Northern India

For the past week, northern regions of India have been experiencing extreme heat accompanied by intense flames. However, this week may bring some relief to residents. On Wednesday, May 21, rain is anticipated in the national capital, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, dust storms, and strong winds. Last week's light rain and thunderstorms led to a slight decrease in maximum temperatures, but the heat is expected to peak this week.

Weather Forecast: Rain and Thunderstorms

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi today. The forecast suggests pleasant weather due to rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Partly cloudy skies with light rain are expected. There is also a possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Maximum temperatures are likely to hover around 40 to 41 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures may range from 29 to 30 degrees Celsius. Surface winds could temporarily reach speeds of up to 40 km/h.

High Humidity Levels

Humidity levels in Delhi are notably high, placing the city at risk of extreme heat. This elevated humidity has caused some discomfort for residents. The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi and the NCR region is expected to remain in the 'moderate' category. The IMD predicts thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with rain on May 22, 2025, and partial cloud cover until May 26. Temperatures are expected to range between 30 to 40 degrees Celsius in the coming week, providing some relief from the heat. Winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 60 km/h will also help alleviate the discomfort. There is no forecast for heatwaves in the upcoming week.

Temperature Trends

Since last week, there has been a slight decline in temperatures across the Delhi-NCR region. However, parts of Haryana, Faridabad, and Gurugram may experience severe heat from May 21 to May 26, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 43 degrees and minimums around 29 degrees.

Air Quality Index Remains 'Moderate'

Due to dust storms, the air quality in Delhi-NCR has been categorized as 'moderate' as of Wednesday morning. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI recorded at 8 AM on May 21 was 198, slightly up from 195 the previous day.
