Record Power Generation Capacity Growth in India for FY26
Significant Increase in Power Generation Capacity
New Delhi, March 19: In a remarkable achievement, India has added an unprecedented 52,537 MW of power generation capacity across all sources during the fiscal year 2026 (up to January 31). This figure surpasses the previous record of 34,054 MW set in FY25, as reported by the government.
The latest capacity expansion includes 39,657 MW derived from renewable sources, with solar contributing 34,955 MW and wind adding 4,613 MW, bringing the total installed capacity to 520.51 GW, according to an official announcement.
This information was released as the 'Bharat Electricity Summit 2026' commenced, a four-day event that gathers policymakers, industry experts, regulators, investors, and civil society to deliberate on energy transition and necessary reforms in the sector.
According to the statement, "India's continuous growth in power generation capacity positions the nation to effectively meet increasing consumption demands while bolstering economic growth."
During FY26, India successfully achieved a peak power demand of 242.49 GW, with power shortages decreasing to 0.03 percent by December 2025, down from 4.2 percent in FY14, as stated by the government.
Efforts have been made to enhance the transmission and transformation infrastructure of the power system. New substations, upgraded transformers, and expanded high-capacity transmission corridors have been established to facilitate efficient electricity movement from generation sites to consumption areas across states. These investments have alleviated bottlenecks, enhanced grid stability, and allowed for the smoother integration of various energy sources into the national grid.
Moreover, the availability of reliable electricity has diminished dependence on diesel generation and conventional fuels, resulting in reduced costs and improved environmental conditions.
India's national transmission network, recognized as the largest synchronous national grid globally, has surpassed 500,000 circuit kilometers and achieved a transformation capacity of 1,407 gigavolt amperes (GVA), as highlighted in the statement.
Initiatives like the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), and Saubhagya have mobilized approximately Rs 1.85 lakh crore in investments, electrifying 18,374 villages and providing electricity connections to around 2.86 crore households.
