RCB's Strategic Moves in WPL 2027 Auction: Key Signings and Missed Opportunities
RCB's Auction Strategy for WPL 2027
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the reigning champions, faced challenges during the WPL 2027 auction. Head coach Malolan Rangaranjan discussed the team's unsuccessful bid to retain Australian captain Sophie Molineux, a pivotal player in their first title victory. RCB successfully acquired four new players, including Australian all-rounder Jess Jonassen for Rs 40 Lakhs, South African all-rounder Chloe Tryon for Rs 30 Lakhs, and Indian batters Tejal Hasabnis and Vrinda Dinesh for Rs 30 Lakhs and Rs 10 Lakhs, respectively.
Sophie Molineux's Transfer to UP Warriorz
Molineux was signed by UP Warriorz for Rs 1.1 crore, making her the most expensive player in the auction. She played a crucial role in RCB's championship run, taking 12 wickets in 10 matches with an average of 23.16, including a standout performance of 3/20 against Delhi Capitals in the 2024 final.
Coach's Insights on Budget Limitations
During an appearance on JioStar’s 'Match Centre Live Auction Special', Malolan reflected on the team's financial constraints while pursuing Molineux. He stated, "With a budget of Rs 1.15 crores, we aimed for Rs 1.05 crores for her. We did our best to bring her back, especially after winning the championship last year. Although we couldn't secure her, we wish her well at UP. The auction process is competitive, and we had other targets in mind as well."
Future Planning and New Signings
Malolan emphasized the significance of signing veteran Jess Jonassen, who will miss the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) this season due to injury. He highlighted her left-arm spin as a valuable asset for both middle and death overs, along with her flexibility to bat in various positions. He mentioned, "Jonassen is expected to recover by the end of December and will participate in domestic List-A games in Australia, ensuring her readiness for the WPL. We are aware of her fitness, but we are excited to have her on board."
Jonassen has a solid WPL track record, having played for Delhi Capitals, where she scored 295 runs in 24 matches with an average of 24.58 and a strike rate of 138.49, alongside taking 33 wickets at an average of 20.75.
