Katey Martin, a former cricketer from New Zealand, remarked on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) achieving a remarkable feat by winning the Women's Premier League (WPL) title for the second time on Thursday, while their men's team already holds the Indian Premier League (IPL) title under Rajat Patidar's leadership.


The stage is set for a rematch in the WPL 2024 final between Delhi Capitals (DC) and RCB, following RCB's impressive victory over Gujarat Giants in the eliminator on Tuesday. Should RCB secure the title again, it would mark their third title in franchise cricket and the first instance of a franchise holding both WPL and IPL titles simultaneously.


Anticipation for an Exciting Match

During a segment on 'Match Centre Live', JioStar analyst Katey expressed her curiosity about RCB's potential to achieve the double in both IPL and WPL, emphasizing the significance of such an accomplishment. She noted the enthusiastic support from the Bengaluru crowd at Chinnaswamy Stadium, highlighting the presence of RCB fans even in this match. Katey praised the unwavering support for both the men's and women's teams, stating, "It would be a special moment for RCB to do the double, but Delhi also carries considerable momentum."


She pointed out the rivalry between Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, calling it an 'intriguing game'. Katey concluded by emphasizing the importance of domestic players in winning tournaments, stating, "While overseas players can secure victories in crucial moments, domestic players form the backbone of a team and are essential for tournament success."


How Delhi Capitals Advanced to the Final

In the eliminator match between Gujarat Giants and Delhi Capitals, DC won the toss and opted to bowl first, restricting the Giants to 59/4 in just 8.4 overs. Beth Mooney scored an impressive 62 runs off 51 balls, forming a 61-run partnership with fellow Australian Georgia Wareham, who contributed 35 runs off 25 balls. Mooney later teamed up with Kashvee Gautam, who scored 18 runs off 10 balls, helping GG reach a total of 168/7. Chinelle Henry was the standout bowler for DC, taking 3 wickets for 35 runs in four overs.


During the chase, Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma set a strong foundation with an 89-run partnership in just 7.1 overs, scoring 43 runs off 24 balls and 31 runs off 21 balls, respectively. Wolvaardt added 32 runs off 24 balls, partnering with skipper Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored 41 runs off 23 balls. Marizanne Kapp sealed the victory with a score of 4*, leading her team to win by three wickets with 26 balls remaining. Jemimah Rodrigues was awarded 'Player of the Match', and her team is set to face the 2024 champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in the title match on Thursday in Vadodara.
