RBI Set to Introduce New Rs 20 Banknotes Featuring Governor's Signature

The Reserve Bank of India has revealed plans to introduce new Rs 20 banknotes featuring the signature of Governor Sanjay Malhotra. These notes will be part of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series and will maintain a design similar to existing Rs 20 notes. Importantly, all previously issued Rs 20 banknotes will continue to be accepted as legal tender. The new notes will showcase the Ellora Caves, reflecting India's cultural heritage. This announcement marks a significant update in India's currency system, ensuring the continuity of older notes.
 

Introduction of New Rs 20 Banknotes

On May 17, 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced its plans to release new Rs 20 banknotes that will feature the signature of Governor Sanjay Malhotra. According to an official statement, the RBI will soon issue these banknotes as part of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. The design of the new notes will closely resemble the existing Rs 20 banknotes in the same series. Importantly, all previously issued Rs 20 banknotes will remain valid for transactions.



The RBI's official website reveals that the new Rs 20 banknotes will measure 63 mm x 129 mm and will feature a greenish-yellow base color. One side of the note will showcase an image of the Ellora Caves, symbolizing India's rich cultural heritage, along with various designs and patterns that complement the base colors.
