Ravichandran Ashwin Questions Team India's Selection Decisions Amid T20I Series Loss
Ashwin Critiques Sooryavanshi's Debut Timing
Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his concerns regarding the team management's choice to debut Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the recent T20I series against England, where India faced a disappointing 4-0 defeat under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.
Sooryavanshi received his first international cap in the second T20I at Old Trafford, stepping in for opener Sanju Samson, who had been underperforming in the series, including the earlier matches against Ireland.
In his initial three matches, the 15-year-old scored 14, 13, and 15 runs, leading to his exclusion from the playing XI for the series' final match. This decision ignited discussions about the management's focus on immediate results rather than long-term player development.
Was Social Media Influence a Factor?
After India's disappointing series loss, Ashwin shared his thoughts on the selection controversy during a discussion on his YouTube channel, 'Ash Ki Baat'. He acknowledged Sooryavanshi's talent but hinted that social media pressure might have played a role in the timing of his debut.
"Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is undoubtedly a talented player. If I were a selector, I would have chosen him too, but he should have been given more time to develop. This is akin to an internship," Ashwin remarked.
"There were calls for my inclusion during my Test tours based on social media buzz, but the management ultimately knows what the team requires. Should selections be influenced by social media?" he questioned.
Delayed Debut and Rising Expectations
Sooryavanshi was anticipated to debut in the Ireland T20I series, but the management opted to stick with the experienced duo of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. This decision seemed strategic, prioritizing seasoned players over introducing the young talent.
As the T20I series against England approached, the increasing demand from fans and analysts to see Sooryavanshi play became overwhelming.
Maintaining Focus Amid External Pressure
Ashwin further elaborated on the importance of the team remaining unaffected by public opinion. He recounted his own experiences of being in form yet not being selected based on the team's strategic needs.
"There were instances where I could have played, but the decision was based on a 50-50 assessment. The management must remain insulated from outside noise. If external pressures influence decisions, it can disrupt the entire team dynamic," he stated.
Looking Ahead for Sooryavanshi
Sooryavanshi's first international series did not yield the expected results, as he struggled to convert his domestic success into performance on the international stage. He is set to return to action in the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, where he is likely to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, following Sanju Samson's rest for the tour.
