In a recent discussion, Ravichandran Ashwin addressed the future of Rohit Sharma in the IPL, suggesting that retirement timelines remain uncertain. He praised Naman Dhir as a potential future captain. Additionally, Ashwin speculated on Hardik Pandya's future with the Mumbai Indians, hinting at a possible trade unless retained. Pandya's captaincy has faced scrutiny following a challenging season, raising questions about his leadership. This article delves into the careers of both players and the dynamics within the Mumbai Indians franchise.

Ravichandran Ashwin on Rohit Sharma's IPL Future

In a recent discussion, former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the notion that Rohit Sharma, the star batter for Mumbai Indians (MI), is set to retire after the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Ashwin emphasized that the timeline for Rohit's retirement is still unclear, drawing comparisons to the enduring career of legendary wicketkeeper MS Dhoni. He also highlighted Naman Dhir as a potential future captain, commending his clear thinking and calm demeanor. "We can't predict if Rohit will play just one more year or continue beyond that. Similar predictions were made about Dhoni, who has played for many more years than expected and might return next season. I see Naman Dhir as a viable captaincy option in the future due to his clarity and composure," Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel.

Rohit Sharma's Illustrious IPL Career

Rohit Sharma has carved out a remarkable legacy in IPL history, accumulating a total of 7,329 runs across 281 matches. The experienced right-handed batsman has a highest score of 109*, with an average of 29.91 and a strike rate of 132.92. His impressive IPL statistics include two centuries and 49 half-centuries, along with 661 fours and 323 sixes. Rohit began his IPL journey with the Deccan Chargers in 2008 before moving to the Mumbai Indians in 2011. Throughout his career, he has secured six IPL titles, including one with Deccan Chargers in 2009 and five with Mumbai Indians. Under his leadership, MI clinched the trophy in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, solidifying his status as one of the tournament's most successful captains.

Hardik Pandya's Future and Captaincy Scrutiny

Ashwin also speculated on Hardik Pandya's future with the Mumbai Indians, suggesting that he may be traded unless the franchise opts to retain him at the last minute. He indicated that MI could pursue a leg-spinner or an Indian left-arm pacer from Punjab Kings as part of a potential trade deal. "It seems likely that Hardik won't remain with MI unless they make a last-minute decision to keep him. I believe he will be traded. MI might seek a leg-spinner in the trade, and there have been discussions about targeting an Indian left-arm pacer from PBKS for Hardik," Ashwin remarked.

Pandya took over as captain of Mumbai Indians in 2024 after returning from Gujarat Titans, succeeding Rohit Sharma. His leadership faced significant scrutiny, especially after the team finished last in the standings with only four wins out of 14 matches. The transition drew considerable attention, as Pandya was under pressure to prove himself in a franchise that had thrived under Rohit's leadership. In 2025, Hardik's captaincy saw a turnaround, leading MI to the playoffs after finishing fourth in the league stage, although their journey ended with a loss to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2. However, the 2026 season was disappointing, with MI managing just four wins in their first 12 matches, ultimately finishing ninth with four wins and ten losses. This failure to reach the playoffs for the second time in three seasons under Hardik intensified scrutiny regarding his captaincy and raised questions about his future in that role.
