Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin praised Team India's head coach Gautam Gambhir for his focus on team dynamics over individual accolades. During a discussion at RevSportz's Trailblazers 4.0, Ashwin shared insights on his retirement, leadership roles within the squad, and the challenges facing Test cricket today.

Ashwin recounted the moment he recognized it was time to step away from the Indian team. "At Perth, during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, I felt like my time was up as the senior bowler," he explained.

After the second Test in Brisbane last year, where he scored 22 and 7 runs and took a wicket, Ashwin officially ended his career with the national team. He concluded with a remarkable tally of 765 wickets across all formats and 4,394 runs, including six centuries and 15 fifties in 233 innings. Ashwin was part of the victorious teams in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, leaving behind a legacy as one of India's greatest all-rounders after a stellar 15-year career.

Ashwin Supports Gambhir's Team-Centric Philosophy

Following his retirement after the Brisbane Test, Ashwin faced criticism aimed at the team management, particularly as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also announced their retirements. Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, was subjected to trolling on social media, with claims that senior players were being forced out.

However, Ashwin defended Gambhir's philosophy, stating, "I appreciate Gautam, and while opinions may vary, he prioritizes the team over individual players." He emphasized that Gambhir recognizes the collective effort rather than individual performances, which he finds admirable.

Bonding with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Ashwin noted the camaraderie they shared throughout their careers. "The best aspect of our group was that we never placed blame on one another. Our common goal was to win for India and bring pride to our nation," he remarked.

Concerns Regarding India's Test Bowling Strength

Ashwin also expressed his concerns about the current state of the Indian Test team amid its transition phase. He pointed out, "The team is evolving. While batting against spin poses challenges, I believe we will develop strong batters. However, the effectiveness of our bowling is a significant concern, which needs addressing."
